Cahill Park is the premier sports park in Gatton with a number of clubs and groups calling our grounds home.

 

A need to find a permanent home for rugby league started the process of developing a premier sporting precinct for Gatton. 

A committee was formed in 1975 to raise enough funds to purchase a block of land at the corner of Buaraba Street and Cumner Road. To this end, Gatton Leagues Club was formed in 1978 with the first executive being Alan Muller (President), John Gallagher (Secretary) & Ken Hooper (Treasurer). The purchase of land was achieved through the Sale of Debentures, Foundation Memberships, Life Subscriptions and a bank loan.

To make repayments and help raise the funds to develop a field and build a clubhouse, local farmers would grow a plot of potatoes or garlic which was then picked by volunteers and the funds donated to the club. Many volunteer hours were also spent helping to grass ovals and help build parts of the clubhouse – anything to help decrease the costs. This is a tradition that continues today. The original building was built by Joe Bennett who is now a life member. 

 

After four years of fundraising and many volunteer hours, Cahill Park was officially named by the Hon. Sir Gordon Chalk K.B.E. and the building opened by the Hon. T.G. Newbery M.L.A. Minister for Sport on 25th Feb 1979. Cahill Park is named in honour of Father James Vincent (Jim) Cahill, the local Catholic parish priest who during his time at Gatton fostered sport for younger residents. Father Cahill kicked off the first junior rugby league game but unfortunately passed away the night before the whole complex was officially opened. 

 

Within a few years of the official opening, Cahill Park was home to rugby league, cricket, touch and netball.

More land was purchased at the corner of Buaraba Street and Princess Street in 1991 to develop more sporting fields and facilities and in 2002 Cahill Park Sports Complex Incorporated a not for profit entity was registered as the trading arm of Gatton Leagues Club Limited.

While only the business premises and bottom rugby league fields are now privately owned, the whole of the sporting fields is managed by Cahill Park Sports Complex on behalf of Lockyer Valley Regional Council.

 

With major renovations completed to the original building in 2015, Cahill Park Sports Complex now provides bistro, bar and gaming facilities which helps fund the sporting facilities for rugby league, cricket, touch, netball, AFL and Step into Life and is the venue for many community events.
